Your FICO score, your score power, your credit score – although it may come with different names, it is a powerful number attributed to the overall health of your personal financial history. Your credit score is the number one aspect that will determine which interest rates are offered to you by banks, mortgage brokers and other lending institutions.

The majority of credit card companies offer three tiers of interest rates to their customers. These interest rates have been labeled as elite, premium and standard. For the most part, those with the highest credit ratings are offered elite credit card interest rates, and those with lower credit ratings are offered premium to standard interest rates on their credit card.

Many card holders are unaware that the interest rate can be adjusted, even after the account has been open and active for an extended period of time. There are many factors that can allow for an increase in interest rate, these are: if payments have been late one to two times, if there have been missed minimum monthly payments on the account, or if payments have been defaulted upon completely. Most often, when a card holder has defaulted upon payments, interest accrues at rates upwards of thirty percent, the maximum interest rate which is charged by the credit card company.

On the other hand, if you have been privy to falling credit scores, you, as the card holder could be liable to paying a higher interest rate. The lower the credit score of the cardholder, the higher the risk to the lending institution, therefore a higher rate is charged to the customer. At this point, the credit score should be increased using methods such as account history, the repayment of debt and the limiting of new accounts which are added to the credit file. These new accounts deplete the history, an important portion of the credit score.

At the other end of the spectrum, those customers that have improved their credit history or have developed good standing with the credit card company can also be granted lower interest rate. A simple phone call the company can yield lower interest rates for the cardholder; all you have to do is ask!

Interest rates are only one of the reasons to maintain the value of your credit score. With the current state of the economy, those with the lowest credit ratings are subject to rejection notices from credit cards, mortgages and even vehicle loans. A low credit score can cost you more than you think, and therefore it is important to keep the score high to maintain the value and health of you personal financial history.

Everyone knows that the information in their personal credit report is what credit card and finance companies use to base their offer to extend credit to you or not, but do you know what is actually in your credit report? Did you know, depending on what information your personal credit report holds, it could determine if you can buy a new home or if you have to live in a box?

Most people think that, when a company looks at their personal credit report, that company is just looking to see what their credit score is and if they have been on time with their payments. True, they look at those things, but the companies also look at how much debt you have compared to your income. Even small accounts, such as those with Fingerhut or some other small mail order company, can be a deduction toward the income considered when you apply for a loan.

If you seem to have more money going out than you do coming in, most of the time the credit card or loan company won’t touch you. By law, if a certain percentage of your income is not available to make the payment on the loan you are trying to get, the loan companies can not loan you any money, whatever the reason may be that you need it.

Your personal credit report also shows if you are, or have been in the last seven years, delinquent with any payments to any company. If you have been thirty days or more late on any payment, rest assured, it’s on your credit report. This tells the lender that you might be a risk to do business with, depending on how long the account was in delinquency and if it has been paid off.

Your personal credit report will also show, for up to ten years, if you have filed bankruptcy. Forget the rumor that a company is more likely to do business with you if you have filed bankruptcy because you can’t file it again for so many years, it’s just simply not true. A bankruptcy shows a credit card or finance company that you tend to get yourself in over your head.

Does your personal credit report say great things about you, or will you be living in the box for awhile?

You have received your free credit report that the government says you are entitled to once a year, you have gone over it carefully, and there are things in it that you want to dispute, but you aren’t sure how to lodge a credit report dispute. The process in itself is pretty easy, though the results you get may not be satisfying.

The first step to lodging a credit report dispute is to write down, in detail, the areas in your credit report that you want to dispute. Make sure you have account numbers, amounts, addresses and why you wish to dispute them. This will give you something to refresh your memory with so you won’t be floundering for information when you call the credit reporting agency or the company you have a dispute with.

To lodge a credit report dispute you need to call the credit reporting agency that has the disputed account listed in the report. Explain to them that you want to lodge a credit report dispute and give them all of the pertinent information that you copied down before you called them. If, for example, your dispute is with an account you have been paying on, provide them with check numbers and payment amounts as well as the dates that the payments were made.

Should your credit report dispute concern an account that you did not open, let them know but don’t necessarily expect them to believe you right off the bat. There are many people who scream identity theft when they know good and well they are the ones that caused the debt. Let them know that you definantly did not apply for that account and stay adamant until they agree to record your credit report dispute.

If you are lodging a credit report dispute about accounts you know nothing about, ask the person you are speaking with to put an identity theft alert on your credit report. This alert should show up anytime someone checks your credit report with that company, causing them to contact you before an offer of credit is extended.

Always make sure to record the information about your credit report dispute, such as when you called, who you talked to and why. You never know when you may have to have that information to prove that you did, in fact, lodge a credit report dispute.

Living in today’s world, you’ve heard numerous reports about identity theft and the steps that you can take to help prevent someone from stealing your identity. One of these things is to regularly check your credit report. Your credit report contains information such as loans that have been taken out, jobs that you have held and whether you have been timely in making payments on your accounts. It also contains such information as your social security number, date of birth, and address history.

When reviewing your credit report, you need to look for things that don’t belong, such as loans or credit cards that you did not apply for. This is a sure sign that someone is using your identity. You also need to check your employment and address history. False information in your credit report about employment and address history may also be a red flag that someone is using your identity. If you find discrepancies in your credit report and you are viewing it on a computer, make sure that you print it out before you call the credit bureaus to report it. This will allow you to have all the information that you need at your fingertips.

There are three major credit reporting agencies that you can get your credit report from and it is recommended that you contact each one. These credit bureaus are Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. You will often find that there are differences in your credit report from each agency. For example, if you have recently received a new credit card, it may show up on your Experian report, but not the other two. Pay close attention to this and record any discrepancies so you can contact the credit bureaus about them.

Checking your credit report semi-annually or annually is one of the ways to help ensure that, if your identity has been stolen, you can catch it in a timely manner and reduce some of the damage that may otherwise be done. With new laws in place giving you the right to receive free annual credit reports, there is no reason to fall victim to the vicious thieves that are out there looking to destroy your life.

You hear the phrase all the time “consumer credit report,” yet you have no idea what it is and think it would make you look like an idiot to ask. A consumer credit report, in short, is the credit report of someone that has credit cards or loan accounts. Do you have a credit card? Taken out a loan for a car or truck? If so, you are a consumer and you have a consumer credit report.

Know all of those credit card offers and finance company fliers offering you credit, or better yet, cash? Now, if you have ever looked at one it says the “offer was made based on information from a consumer credit reporting agency.” In short, that means that someone has sold them a mailing list that has your name on it because, at one time or another, you’ve done some sort of finance or credit business with them.

Your consumer credit report will say the exact same thing that your personal credit report says because, well, they are one in the same. Therefore, if you have good credit, you have good credit and vice versa. Your consumer credit report isn’t going to reflect anything different, though you may wish it did.

The simple truth is that there are many different names for a credit report and consumer credit report is one of them. A credit report is a credit report, regardless of what name it may be given. However, your consumer credit report does look more at what credit cards you have or which finance and loan companies you may use. This allows the companies that are sending you offers to be able to market their wares specifically to you and you only.

With all the hype of identity theft people are becoming more and more concerned about what may be in their credit report. With the internet, it is now possible to find out with just the push of a few buttons. There are many ways to get a free online credit report. You could go to a credit monitoring sight, or the sight that is specifically set up for you to receive the free annual credit report the government says you are entitled to.

To receive your free online credit report from a credit monitoring service, simply “google” the key words free credit report and google will come up with thousands of results. Most credit monitoring companies offer to let you view your credit report online free for 30 days, then they charge you a monthly fee to “monitor” your report, emailing you when there are any changes. This is good if you want to keep an eye on what is happening. If you choose not to use the service, just contact them within the 30 day limit to cancel the service, being sure to allow them enough time before they start the billing.

Another way to receive your free online credit report is by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com. This site will allow you to view your report from all three of the major credit reporting agencies; Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Each one will ask you to verify some personal information and then let you view your free online credit report. This service is available to you once a year.

Once you have viewed your free online credit report, make sure that you print a copy of each one out, noting the discrepancies and which agencies they are with. If there are discrepancies in your free online credit report, be sure to contact the credit reporting agency immediately to dispute the information.
